La Sera (the evening) is a brand of varietal wines from Italy’s Piedmont region. Three of the wines are 100% Barbera. Peter Matt selects them from different sub-zones, looking for tipicity with enough polish and softness to appeal to most drinkers. Each La Sera Barbera has a nickname. “Il Falo” (the bonfire) is a fragrant and fruity wine, easy-to-drink, and moderately priced, with the Piemonte appellation. It is a delightful introduction to the varietal, Italian-style. “Il Sogno” (the dream) is a Barbera d'Asti that displays a bright, berryish fruit flavor. The third style is the richest, a Barbera d’Alba called “Il Cielo” (the sky). It is a wine with more immediacy and finesse. The fourth La Sera wine is a red Malvasia di Casorzo, a moderately sweet, fizzy dessert wine that would be a great match for sorbet.
