Malgra' winery is surrounded by its 100 hectares of vineyards at Mombaruzzo
in the heart of Asti province. This hilly region has a long history of
producing excellent Barbera. In 2001, Malgra' brought in new partners
and new investments. The company purchased vineyards in 4 other Piemontese
wine districts: Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco, and Roero. It also financed
the complete overhaul of the winery, adding new equipment and barrel storage.
Malgra' is now poised to become one of the leading producers of Piemontese
appellation wines.
Matt Brothers' introduces the company's own labels with the selection of
3 wines: Gavi del Commune di Gavi, Malgra' Monferrato, and Barbera d'Asti
"Gaiana." Malgra's Gavi is classic and dry with good concentration and crispness.
The Malgra' Monferrato is a blend of Barbera and Cabernet
Sauvignon. Barbera is by nature low in tannin, high in acid. Cabernet
often shows the opposite relationship of these elements. Together, the
jammy quality of Cabernet and the racy spice of Barbera make a tasty combination.
Barrique aging smoothes the texture. Gaiana is the name of one of Malgra's
very best sites for Barbera. The combination of steep slopes and old vines
makes for low yields per plant and great concentration in the wine.
