This is a small estate at Ipplis in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. Rocca Bernarda has been producing wines since the construction of a castle and cellar on the site in 1567. A property of the Order of the Knights of Malta, which descends from the Knights Templar of the Crusades, Rocca Bernarda uses profits from management of its property for charitable causes around the world. The estate has worked hard on preserving the Rocca Bernarda clone of Picolit and a full-bodied Merlot Centis that is reminiscent of right-bank Bordeaux. It also produces Pinot Grigio, Tocai, Sauvignon, and Refosco. They are known for their aromatic, well-structured white wines, widely considered to be Italy’s best.
