Sfida is an Italian word meaning challenge. We chose this name because the wine it designates challenges several notions about the look, taste, and provenance of Southern Italian wine. Sfida is a collaboration between Matt Brothers and the Cantina del Locorotondo, a modern co-operative in the rich, seaside growing region of central Puglia. In addition to native varieties such as Primitivo, Locorotondo's farmers have also had success with Aglianico (more common in neighboring Basilicata) and Cabernet (a mainstay in northern Puglia).

Our goal is to offer a ripe, full-bodied wine, expressive of the southern terroir, and moderate in price. To achieve this goal, Peter Matt works together with winemaker Giuseppe LoRusso on blending the different varieties in a style tailored to the American market. The Puglia IGT allows them a broad geographical palate from which to choose fruit.
